DocNomads films presented in Uppsala, Sweden
The diptych DON'T POLITICIZE : GO HUNGARY directed by Jasmijn Kooijman & Wyneke van Nieuwenhuyzen will be screened together in competition at the 45th Uppsala Short Film Festival held between 19 and 25 October in Sweden.
When living in Hungary a year ago, Viktor Orbán was still leading the country. We were fascinated by how different the reactions to his politics were amongst Hungarian youth. In the left leaning capital of Budapest, youngsters - specifically queer teens - were orientating towards a future abroad since embracing their identities in Hungary seemed impossible. In the more right-wing countryside, military highschools attracted big groups of teenagers who wanted to serve their country; one of the few opportunities available to secure their future in an area with limited possibilities. Two opposing realities, just a hundred kilometers apart.
We captured these realities in two short films that can be screened as stand-alone short films but tell a bigger story when screened together. Both films are partly shot by the teens themselves.

NE POLITIZÁLJ
By Jasmijn Kooijman (Sweden) & Wyneke van Nieuwenhuyzen (Netherlands) · 16’ · 2026
Synopsis:
In the northern region of Hungary, the populist propaganda of Orbán’s regime dictates the lives of military high school student Luca and her friends. But how do you distinguish between the opinions imposed on you and your own intrinsic beliefs in the most forming period of your life?

By Jasmijn Kooijman (Sweden) & Wyneke van Nieuwenhuyzen (Netherlands) · 15’ · 2025
Synopsis:
GO HUNGARY is a personal film diary showing life in Hungary under Viktor Orbán’s rule, from the perspective of teenage twins Nati and Dorka. Anger, frustration, and the fatigue caused by the country’s political situation become the starting point for a story about the girls’ everyday lives. Together with the girls, we travel through places marked by omnipresent propaganda and look for safe spaces where freedom can be felt.
