Mareike Wegener is a German film director, screenwriter and producer.

She studied filmmaking at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne and the New School in New York, focusing on painting and documentary filmmaking. She was also enrolled at the European Graduate School in Switzerland, where she studied Media and Communication.

Her 2008 thesis film “Al Hansen – The Matchstick Traveller’ premiered at the Anthology Film Archives in New York. Her first feature-length documentary "Mark Lombardi – Death-defying Acts of Art and Conspiracy" received the prestigious Gerd-Ruge-Grant in 2009. It was released in German theatres and presented at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Her short "X" premiered at International Short Film Festival Oberhausen in 2020 and subsequently won the German Short Film Award in silver. Her first feature fiction “ECHO” was invited to the 2022 Berlinale.

In 2012 Wegener founded the production cooperative PETROLIO together with fellow filmmakers Hannes Lang and Carmen Losmann. Wegener is co-writer of all Hannes Lang documentaries, including "PEAK" (2011), "I WANT TO SEE THE MANAGER" (2014) and "RIAFN" (2019), she also produced the latter two. Further producing credits include Carmen Losmann’s "OECONOMIA", a documentary that was invited to the 2020 Berlinale Forum and won two Grimme Prizes, Germany’s most important TV Award.

Films created with Mareike Wegener’s participation have received theatrical releases in Germany as well as having been made available on DVD, VoD, and television. They have played major international film festivals, including Berlinale, IDFA, CPH:DOX, Visions du Réel, DOK Leipzig, Sheffield Doc/Fest, Docs against Gravity, Full Frame, Ji.hlava, and AFI Silverdocs, winning numerous awards. Mareike Wegener received various research grants to travel the US, Turkey and Poland, and has frequently served as a jury member at film festivals.

To her, collaboration plays a singular role in the filmmaking-process and she believes that cooperation, including mentoring and education, are at the heart of cinematic practice.
