UC Master Classes
Portuguese and International Filmmakers
Course supervisor: Margarida Cardoso
This course unit focuses on the screening of a selection of film works presented by their authors, combining informal lectures and discussions with students.
Master classes are organised with the participation of documentary filmmakers that exemplify distinct authorial approaches to the art form.
Classes should highlight a variety of aspects of each director’s experience, such as personal intentions and methods used for the creative treatment of reality subjects, as well as the circumstances in which some of their films were made, its financing and distribution, audience reception, and critical reactions.
The presentation and discussion of documentary makers’ unique methods, filmic visions and professional achievements aim to inspire students in the development of their own projects.
The opportunity to become acquainted with first-person viewpoints from different directorial experiences should give students a comprehensive insight in to the documentary-making process, and also help them to improve their own perspective on film directing practice.
The Master Classes course consists mainly of screenings and lectures by visiting filmmakers, but seminars with other guest experts may also be programmed.
