Hungarian Cinema and Hungarian Identity
Lecturers: György Csepeli, Lóránt Stőhr
The course is organized in two separate modules, Hungarian Identity and Hungarian Cinema.
Classes involve historical, sociological, political and aesthetic analysis, as well as the contextualization of outstanding works in Hungarian film history (feature films and documentaries).
The screened films explore the issues of Hungarian identity, with a special emphasis on periods of dictatorship and their lasting effects. The films and the lectures highlight the relationship between the individual and political power along with the social background, from which students will learn about the most significant moments in recent Hungarian history that mainly defined contemporary Hungarian mentality, way of thinking, and artistic vision.
In addition, students will develop their skills in film analysis and enrich their knowledge of film history.
