UC Master Classes

Belgian and International Filmmakers

Course supervisors: Rob Rombout and Pascal Vandelanoitte

This course unit, like the master classes organized in Lisbon and Budapest, focus on the screening of a selection of film works presented by their authors, combining informal lectures and discussion with students.

Classes highlight a variety of aspects of each director’s experience, such as personal intentions and methods used for the creative treatment of reality subjects, as well as the circumstances in which some of their films were made, its financing and distribution, audience reception, and critical reactions.

The presentation and discussion of documentary makers’ unique methods, filmic visions and professional achievements aim to inspire students in their own projects development. The opportunity to become acquainted with first-person viewpoints from different directorial experiences should give students a comprehensive insight into the documentary making process, and also help them to improve their own perspective on film directing practice.

Master classes by international filmmakers are either organized at LUCA or followed within the framework of the Belgian film festival Filmer A Tout Prix (organised bi-annually), or of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), which is also visited within the framework of the ‘Events and Visits’ course unit.
