UC Events and Visits

Activities and Screenings in INA (France) and IDFA (Netherlands)

Course supervisor: Rob Rombout

Within the framework of this activities-based course unit, students visit the renowned Institut National de l'Audiovisuel (INA) in Paris, France, and the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

At INA, students become acquainted with a unique archival collection, created thanks to a rare experiment: the legal obligation (the so-called “dépôt légal”) to archive documentaries that were commercially released or broadcasted on television.

At IDFA, students are introduced to the largest documentary film festival in the world. They engage with other international students (during a workshop with the Amsterdam Film Academy) and get the opportunity to see fresh, outstanding works, as well as build contacts with festival participants and organisers. Students attend the screenings of recent films from all around the world and have personal contact with some of their makers. They also take part in professional conferences and other events of the festival programme.

Depending on the type of visits and screenings, students may attend a selected programme of films and events led by the course supervisor, or follow an independent programme according to their personal interests and time conveniences.
