João Ribeiro (DoP) graduated at the National School of Theater and Cinema (ESTC) in 1992, and became an experienced cinematographer in documentary and feature films. Since 1993, he was involved in the cinematography of more than 40 productions and co-productions with France, Germany, Sweden, Guinea-Bissau and USA.

His career is linked to the initial works of a new generation of Portuguese documentary filmmakers in the 90’s, such as Catarina Alves Costa, Catarina Mourão, and Sérgio Tréfaut.

In 2003 he co-directed his first documentary, Entre Muros, which he also cinematographed, selected for the festivals ‘Cinéma du Réel’, and ‘Festival Dei Popoli’, among others.

He was given the Best Cinematography Award at the DocLisboa Festival 2003 for the film Desassossego, by Catarina Mourão. In 2007 he received the awards of Best Cinematography in European Films (VIII Festival de Cinema Europeu, Lecce, Itália) and Best Cinematography (Festival Cineport, Brazil), both for the film Transe, by Teresa Villaverde. Many of the films in which he worked were selected for important festivals all around the world and received distinctions.

He has been teaching in several workshops, seminars and courses, organized by the Ateliers Varan (Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon), and the Zelig School of Documentary and New Media (Bolzano, Italy), among others.
